Miniature Donkeys are native to the Mediterranean Island of Sicily and Sardinia and were first imported to the United States about 75 years ago.
Male donkeys are referred to as jacks, female donkeys are jennets, and baby donkeys are called foals.
Gestation is 11-1/2 13 months. Jennets typically have a single baby averaging 20 30 pounds at birth.
The miniature donkey thrives on attention, is intelligent, easily trained, and compatible with other livestock.
The average life span of the miniature donkey is 30 years, most weigh between 200 - 350 pounds at maturity, and their height cannot exceed 36 inches at the withers.
Grey-dun (slate) is the predominant color and almost all miniatures have the characteristic cross. Other miniature donkey colors are black, brown, white, sorrel and spotted. Most have a light tan muzzle and eye rings, although some have dark points.
Miniature donkeys are herd animals and it is recommended that they be kept with another miniature donkey or other animal.
Donkeys are quite healthy and hardy, but do need shelter from the summer sun, winter winds and flies. Miniatures can be housed in a relatively small area with very simple fencing.
They require good quality hay, a small amount of grain, a mineral salt block and clean, fresh water. It is also preferable that miniature have some access to pasture for grazing and exercise.
Miniature donkeys also require yearly vaccinations (just like your family pet), should be wormed regularly with an oral paste wormer, and have their hooves trimmed every 2-3 months.
They are considered easy keepers and are very forgiving of our mistakes in their care. Their small size and gentle temperament make them easier to manage than larger farm animals.
